A SUPERHERO SOUTH AFRICAN PLANT FRIEND.
If you ever find yourself visiting South Africa, you will 100% encounter this stunning succulent plant.
It is indigenous to the Eastern Cape province and usually found in semi-desert and rocky type places, but nowadays can be spotted in gardens nationwide. The Spekboom is a sprawling shrub or a small tree and can be easily recognised by their small, bright green leaves (which is why I love them!). They are incredibly versatile and easy to care for. They're even fantastic for the environment.
Thanks to a wonderful article from Shamwari Private Game Reserve, here are some interesting facts about the Spekboom:
1. IT CLEANS THE AIR
- The Spekboom is highly absorbent of carbon dioxide, much like a sponge.
- It's strength competes with that of the tropical rainforests. Many have hailed this plant as a fighter against climate change.
2. ITS WATERWISE
- This succulent can adapt to its environment so well that it can survive on very little water.
- Its adaptability of extreme conditions (from drought to frost) is what makes this plant so easy to care for.
3. ITS EDIBLE
- The Spekboom is a favourite snack amongst elephants, kudu and black rhino in the wild but also as medicinal usage in local communities.
- The leaves are filled with moisture and can be used to quench thirst on a hike (some even add them to salads!).
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR SPEKBOOM:
- This plant can be grown as ground cover, hedging or simply in a pot inside.
- For houseplants, keep them in a bright spot near a window.
- During summer, water weekly (keep the same schedule) but don't soak the plant.
- You can water them less frequently in the winter.
- Trimming them helps with growth.
- Tip: you can grow a new Spekboom by simply snipping off a piece and planting into another pot!
Good luck!
